MissionAt Adelante Healthcare Mentors our mission is to mentor underrepresented minorities towards obtaining their dream healthcare job. Through mentorship and encouragement, current healthcare students and graduated healthcare professionals will guide undergraduate mentees. The goal is to make it easier for the next generation of students than it was for us. We all know how difficult it can be to get into your dream professional healthcare school, especially when you have no guidance. How We Started
The idea for Adelante Healthcare Mentors was started up in 2020 and came to fruition one year after I, Andrew Casanova, started medical school. When I got into medical school, I was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief after a very long application year. However, I told myself that once I got in I would reach out to an old advisor of mine that gave me the motivation to push towards my goal.
I started my undergraduate studies off to a rocky start, being away from home and dealing with large classes made it hard for me to excel. I reached out to an academic advisor in hopes that she could guide me towards some clarity on how to improve. She saw my grades and heard of my aspirations and laughed me out of her office, “you will never be a doctor, you might as well give up.” Words that cut deep but eventually would be the fuel to push on. The struggle continued as I had to fight for the spot I wanted, it was especially hard until I found friends and mentors that could guide and motivate me. I firmly believe that if it wasn’t for my friends in the years ahead of me and the mentors that truly cared about me, that I would not be here writing this today. When I finally got into medical school and reached out to her from a place of kindness, asking her to be more understanding and optimistic when speaking with her students.
The team of healthcare workers is vital to taking care of any patient. All healthcare professions deserve the same amount of recognition and understanding as any other profession. That is why I decided to create Adelante Healthcare Mentors, with the healthcare team, as a whole, in mind. I would like to bring mentors and mentees from across the country, together, so that we can motivate those striving for a spot that all the mentors worked so hard to get to. I hope to help everyone and anyone who needs it, I believe that if you really want to be in the healthcare field, that your passion is to help and care for others, that you should be able to do it in the profession that you want to!
Adelante is Spanish for “to move forward” a word that is near and dear to my heart. A word that rings loud in my ears as I push forward in the healthcare field. This powerful word is a sort of mantra that I aim to bring to all those who join our program, so that we can all move forward together, Adelante!
